Buckle up ladies and gents. We have some amazing news to share with you!
It’s been a long time coming, but we have almost dotted all the i’s and crossed all of the t’s on making our Veteran Business Owners group the real deal!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with our passion turned side project, we are a local group of veteran business owners who gather in a relaxed, informal manner on the third Tuesday of every month to discuss professional roadblocks or difficulties pertaining to business operations in the civilian sector, and who volunteer or support other veteran groups whenever possible.
The name of our group is Golf Yankee 6. No, we’re not just six guys who really love golf and the Yankees. This name actually pays homage to our military days. In the military, there’s a standard term for saying, “I got your back” — it’s “Got your six.” If we shorten this to GY6 and use the phonetic alphabet to translate, you get Golf Yankee 6.
Our story originally began with just five vets, and we jokingly referred to our little group as “The League of Extraordinary Veterans.” We would start every meeting with a planned topic, which would naturally evolve into general questions or idea discussions about business. Once the formal talk was over, we would just hang out with each other and talk about anything and everything.
Although our small group has gotten sizably larger now, as more and more vets join with every meeting, we still follow the same program; the meetings begin with a planned agenda and end with a little bit of socialization. We’ve found that a relaxed environment is the best way to network and bounce ideas or issues off of each other. Plus, there’s nothing better than the camaraderie between vets. Though some of us never knew each other in our military days, there’s always an automatic connection and understanding between us that’s impossible to find in other parts of daily life. In a sense, it’s therapeutic.
Although things have been stalled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, they’re picking up slowly. Soon, we plan to take part in volunteering programs and events that help support veterans, like Warriors on the Water. We’re even thinking long-term about helping to raise money for veteran charities. Our whole group, which is now bigger than ever, is 100% dedicated to the cause, so you can expect big things from us soon.
